United Kingdom

Bio: My life has led me on an interesting journey!! Born of Irish parents in the UK I have always felt myself to be blest by being both a citizen of the Irish Diaspora but also a child of North Staffs!! My early life was as a resident early Yippiedom - a follower of both the Edgar Broughton Band and Frank Zappa!!! This was followed by 23 years and 100 days service in the Royal Air Force! Now many might see this as being rather contradictory but as a believer in democracy and freedom I see the two as being complementary. After leaving the RAF in 1996 I have worked in Higher Education, where I worked as a Principal Lecturer teaching Philosophy and Media. My research interest is in the Political Economy Culture, Media & Sport and the meta-narrative that links them and now that, since February 2017, I have moved into semi-retirement, I am hoping to become more active in my research. I start from the personal perspective of being a Watermelon Man (Eco & Co-operative Socialist). Personally I was a latecomer to the benefits of Higher Education but this has only increased my dedication to its virtues and given me an enthusiasm for ensuring its distribution to the widest possible audience. I endeavour to bring three key values to my work: integrity, respect and inspiration and I always try to see the broader picture and empower others to achieve their personal goals and ambitions in the same way I have been fortunate to do. I truly believe that having a keenness and ability to adapt to new situations and environments has helped me overcome the challenges that life has thrown at me. Interests and activities: Non-Work I have a wife and two grown up children – a son and a daughter - and I enjoy spending time with them. Faith –a practicing Roman Catholic, my religion has underpinned all of my activities. It has provided me with not only my moral compass but also my belief in the need to empower others. It has driven my choices not only in terms of my education – MA in International and European Studies (Third World) – but also my engagement in politics. Political activities 2007-present Branch Secretary Cannock Chase Co-operative Party 2009-present Member of Regional Council of Midcounties Co-operative Party Environment – Past Member of the Brecknock Wildlife Trust and as part of my undergraduate degree I carried out a project on the impact of mechanically powered vehicles and the environmental sustainability of Llangorse Lake Outdoors – During my time in the RAF I was involved in various aspects of Outdoor Pursuits and whilst I am now less energetic I still enjoy hill-walking whenever I’m able to get away for the weekend.
